Extending Writing: Using a Recount Exemplar with 5&6 Year Olds.

Using a recount exemplar as a scaffold has enabled my students to start developing control of their writing. My students have been extending their writing to include more detail. Our journals are a record of each student’s personal history. They understand that when they read their writing back in years to come they will want to remember as much as they can about the things they did. This also relates to an earlier inquiry into personal histories. All children, at every stage of writing development are benefitting from using a structure to support their writing.

Before writing their journals, the children focus on the exemplar to remind them of the main parts of a recount. We also discuss punctuation and spelling strategies.

Title

Orientation: When? Who? Where?

Sequence of events: What happened?

Personal Comment

A large number of my students are now extending their writing. They are excited by their ability to record events. These students are 5 & 6 year olds, and I’m amazed by what they are capable of. It’s interesting to see their use of punctuation developing in the examples below. Using commas, capital letters, full stops, spaces between words and time words is evident.

Toy Story: An Inquiry into Toys by Prep Students – First Year of Formal Education in Australia.

Yesterday, was our Prep Toy Expo. The whole school community really supports our Prep students. The Expo is attended by parents, grandparents, all students and teachers. It’s a wonderful experience for our Preps to explain their toy design and show their toy. There were  80 plus Prep students, their toy and design brief set up in our multi-purpose room. The Expo runs for one hour and is very busy. Great conversations were heard, with older students and parents asking terrific questions about each toy.  I’ve included a couple of pages from a design brief. The other pages have photos on them. Photos of children are not included in this blog. The last page is a student reflection and teacher reflection.

Today was football day. Yesterday, the children took their toy home, but one returned today. This toy is a real character, although I’m sure he could be dressed in better colors.

Toy Story: Prep Inquiry – Our curriculum is International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP). Take a look!

My school has recently completed pre-autorisation for the  (IB).  Our curriculum is developed using the IB-Primary Years Program (PYP) framework. Our present Inquiry is outlined below:

Transdisciplary Theme

How the world works

Central Idea

  • Toys have changed over time due to technology

Lines of Inquiry

  • Toys are made of a variety of materials
  • Technology has changed toys over time

Learner Profile

  • Open Minded

Attitudes

  • Creativity
  • Curiosity

Key Concepts

  • Function
  • Change

The children have been completing their own Toy Design Brief. Using their brief they are making a prototype of their toy. I’ve included pictures to show their work. We’ve had some very industrious sessions. The children have loved making their prototype. Please ignore the Christmas table covers; I use them all year round. So what does a Prep classroom look like in Australia? Take a look!

The foam was wonderful. It actually looked liked it had been snowing by the end of this session. Very Exciting! The children are now preparing their color swatch which will be included in their brief. They’ll be painting and ‘glitzing’ this week in preparation for our TOY EXPO. The whole school community is invited to attend the Toy Expo. Parents and children are asked to donate a gold coin which is donated to the Salvation Army to help provide toys for children in need. These young children understand this. The school community are asked to question the children about their toy… and admire of course. I’ll post some finished toys soon.

As part of our inquiry, parents and grandparents were invited to share a toy from their childhood at our Toy Talk. It always amazes me how supportive our community is.  Here’s a few pictures of some toys brought in and explained by our visitors. Each toy has a personal history, which links beautifully with one of our previous inquiries.

Only one more week until our Term 3 holidays (2 weeks). The year is flying! For my international readers, in Australia, we have a four term year. Each term is roughly 10/11 weeks. We start in late January/ beginning February and finish mid December for our Summer holidays.

August Writing: Scaffolding-Using the PM Exemplar Big Book is supporting my students.

We’ve been looking at the structure of a Recount using the PM Exemplar Big Book, and it’s really helping my 5&6 year olds develop their ideas and sequence events. When you look at these samples, some have written a title, made a good attempt at  sequencing and added a personal comment at the end.  I’m very pleased with their writing, and more importantly their love of writing. I’ve got to remember that these are young writers in their first year of formal education in Australia. This is independent writing.

Teacher Resource: Loving this- PM Exemplars for Teaching Writing (Big Book) & over 30 000 visits to my blog. Thanks for visiting!

I’m not into advertising, but when I find a great resource I think it needs to be shared. My new ‘fav’ is the PM  Exemplars for Teaching Writing Big Books. I’ve recently purchased this book (Level 1) for each Prep grade. This week I used the Recount as a teaching focus and scaffold. Many of my Preps need to structure their writing, as they are writing 4 to 5 sentences. I’ll be using this book each week to extend my student’s writing and to introduce new genres.  I’m a visual learner, so I’ve posted a number of pictures to show the contents.

‘The PM Writing Exemplars for Teaching Writing are large format books designed to help teachers model the conventions of written language in whole-class and small-group sessions. The books provide the initial introduction to each text type, presenting and deconstructing exemplars of the 9 text types taught across the 4 levels. The Exemplars for Teaching Writing form the start of the PM Writing suggested teaching pathways. The material presented in these books is reinforced through use of the Interactive Writing Pro Formas and Student Books. Each exemplar text is presented over three double-page spreads.’  NELSON CENGAGE Learning

I hope you’re enjoying the new look of my blog, it was time for a change!

Lauching the Ultranet & the Ultranet Tattoo!

Today was the official launch of the Ultranet and despite not being able to log in for any length of time, we still had a full day of learning. Completing the treasure hunt using the Ultranet teacher’s manual went well… and showing the video, ‘The Ultranet in Plain English’ was fantastic – such a clever, explicit and visual teaching tool.

Our staff completed a ‘Headline’ reflection activity after our morning session and I’ve  included samples. They were asked to provide a Headline – (short text)  for today’s newspaper. We watched a number of videos, and completed another treasure hunt using the training modules instead of online. Some teachers were able to access the Ultranet and quickly ‘got the hang of’  using  some of the tools. I was impressed with what they were able to do in such a short time.

There were a number of prizes throughout the day, which were particularly sought after. I’ve included pictures – the Ultranet tribe tattoo arm sleeve. As a staff, we ventured into FUSE – visited wikis and played with Voki. Voki was used for our final reflection (hilarious). Actually having the time to explore these sites was excellent… and we also enjoyed a fantastic Indian lunch.

It was a pleasure to spend the day with my colleagues, and despite the obvious problems, they were engaged and enthusiastic.

Excellent video: The Ultranet in Plain English

The big day for Victorian teachers is tomorrow, with the official release of the Ultranet. Here is an excellent video which explicitly explains the Ultranet in ‘plain English’. This is a huge step forward for Victoria, Australia… and is the start of a very long journey. This is the journey we need to have!

Connecting, Collaborating – building supportive, professional relationships on the net!

Today,  my Teacher Professional Leave  partner Jenni and I were invited to a Dr. Richard Elmore workshop on Instructional Rounds. This was absolutely fabulous and Jenni and I will post about the workshop in the Instructional Rounds ning soon, but it’s not why I’m writing this post. Today reaffirmed why I blog, ning and Twitter… and now Ultranet-ing. There is no doubt in my mind that these are great places to develop professional relationships. Someone said to me recently that you can’t build professional relationships on the net. I disagree!

Today Jenni and I were sitting having lunch with Dr. Richard Elmore (I’ll drop that one in) when we saw this principal. I was sure it was Mark Walker, a principal who has been a wonderful supporter of the Instructional Rounds ning. He saw us… and the connection was made. I was amazed by the instant familiarity Jenni and I had with Mark. Having read Mark’s blog, wiki and collaborated within the Instructional Rounds ning there was sense of already knowing him. It was great to meet up with Mark, and reaffirmed why I connect with educators in Australia and globally (many whom I will never meet), to share and collaborate with.

To Mark, it was great to finally meet you and we really appreciate your support!

Cheers Nina (and Jenni)

The Ultranet: ‘You’ve got to think about big things while you’re doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction.’ Alvin Toffler

I’ve been waiting for this for quite some time! Having just spent my second day training as a Lead User for the Ultranet, my confidence has grown and my vision for using this space for teaching and learning is expanding rapidly. It will take time to become totally familiar with all the applications, but navigating this site is logical. Loving the icons! It does, however, seem to time out every now and then, but I’m sure that will be addressed when it’s updated. Of particular interest to me is the Design & Collaborative Learning spaces. For those out there who are concerned, this is not beyond any educator. Take your time and access people who can help you ‘one on one’ if needed.

The Cognitive Taxonomy Circle – A great visual support for planning for deeper levels of thinking (teaching & learning)

This was shared in another forum and I thought it would be worth sharing here. It’s a great visual planning diagram to view when thinking and planning opportunities for our students to develop deeper levels of thinking. The diagram identifies the activities and products related to Remembering, Applying, Analysing, Creating and Evaluating. Follow the link below the image.
