PART 1-The ‘shape’ of our lives is continuously changed by events: My Strange Shrinking Parents by Zeno Sworder.

My friend Sue introduced me to a wonderful book she has been unpacking with older students. Listening to her talk about her students’ reactions and understanding of the text was enough for me to purchase my own copy. The numerous themes intertwining throughout the story enables this book to be unpacked with links to many different themes. The theme she discussed with me was SHAPE!

‘To my immigrant parents. And to all parents who burden and narrow their own lives in the hope that their children will be free to go further.’ Zeno Sworder

I love the way Sue explained how they unpacked the text to understand how the events in our lives change the shape of our lives. Events which are positive and negative not only shape us, but they also shape our now…and future. The notion of shape and change intertwines through this beautiful story.

‘This is the shape of our lives now,’ they told each other.

Cheers Nina
